ATAI-funded researchers, Joshua Deutschmann, economist at the University of Chicago, and Tanguy Bernard, Professor at the University of Bordeaux, are organizing a workshop in Senegal with the support of ATAI staff Oct 2-3 to discuss aflatoxins and other food safety and agricultural quality issues. The objectives of this workshop are to exchange ideas around food safety and build connections between researchers and policymakers to lay the groundwork for scaling evidence-informed policies.
Our overarching objectives for the workshop are to:
● Showcase Groundbreaking Research: Researcher presentations will discuss the frontier of evidence on the economics of food safety and agricultural quality issues in low- and middle-income countries. This builds in part on a workshop organized by Tanguy Bernard, Alain de Janvry, and Elisabeth Sadoulet in 2023 discussing markets for quality in smallholder agriculture in low-income countries.
● Promote Evidence Use: Through participation of policymakers in the food safety space, this event would facilitate conversations between researchers and policymakers to support the adaptation of lessons from existing research to influence policy, strategy, and program decisions.
● Foster Strong Connections: Create an open space for debate and discussion between policymakers, researchers, implementers, and donors, to foster future collaboration.
The event will be held over two-days Oct 2-3. The first day will feature presentations of new research outputs while the second day will foster discussion between researchers, policymakers and implementers. The goal is to facilitate partnerships to scale some of the ongoing research, and spark follow-up work for collaboration between attendees.
